A Short Biography
In 1975 I began my piano apprenticeship at Europe’s biggest pianoforte manufacturer, Wilhelm Schimmel in Braunschweig, Germany.
There I completed a comprehensive factory-based apprenticeship programme, in which regular modules of production line integration allowed me to gain skills in all matters of piano manufacture. That period of my training included nine months at the School of Piano Building in Ludwigsburg, Germany. After acquiring my diploma I spent three more years at Schimmel furthering my skills in building grand pianos. During my final year there I was entrusted with the final tuning, regulation, and voicing of grand pianos.
Overseas travel led me to work with piano maker Wayne Stuart in Tasmania. This was followed by employment in various cities in Germany, where I gained experience in customer service, music conservatoire servicing, concert tunings, restoration work, and sound-board replacements.
I moved to New Zealand in 1988, initially employed with Atwaters Music Company in Auckland. Since 1989 I been self employed based in Whanganui, servicing a wide geographical area and looking after the city’s Opera House Steinway for national and international artists.
I am married to Katharina, a Feldenkrais Practitioner. In my younger days I was an avid sky diver, however these days I rarely take to the skies but enjoy the earthly pleasures of life.
